Four Fatalities Result from Two-Vehicle Collision in Isolated Central Queensland

Four individuals lost their lives in a fatal two-car collision along a secluded stretch of the Capricorn Highway in Queensland’s central highlands. On Sunday afternoon, authorities remained at the site of the accident, situated between the historical coal mining towns of Comet and Blackwater, with the highway expected to remain closed for an extended period.

Two persons involved in the crash, which happened around 10:50 a.m. on Sunday, were rushed to Emerald hospital with severe injuries. The Capricorn Highway, extending from Rockhampton in central Queensland to Barcaldine, is predominantly a single-lane road in each direction, featuring long straight sections, notably around the area of Blackwater.

“The Queensland police service reported that four individuals perished at the scene, while two were taken to Emerald hospital with serious injuries. Due to the complexity of the incident, no further information is available at this time,” according to a statement from the Queensland police service.

This tragic event marks a grim weekend on Queensland roads, with a total of at least eight fatalities since Friday evening. Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 26-year-old man, who apparently fell from a car at Tamborine in the Scenic Rim.

Additionally, three teenagers near Mackay lost their lives in a crash on Friday night, when their vehicle struck a dual-cab ute while attempting to overtake a truck at Glenella, near Mackay. The victims, all aged 19, succumbed to their injuries at the scene, including two men and a woman.
