At least 14 people have died in South Korea due to floods and landslides caused by continuous heavy rain, the country’s disaster management office has announced. Rescue efforts are ongoing, and the death toll is expected to rise with 12 individuals still reported missing. Since the downpour began on Wednesday, nearly 10,000 individuals have evacuated their homes, and over 41,000 households have experienced temporary power outages, according to local media. The rain has mostly subsided in the worst-affected southern and central areas, but more showers are anticipated in the capital, Seoul, and northern regions.
Thousands of roads and buildings have been damaged and flooded in the wake of raging floodwaters. Reports indicate significant damage to farmland and a considerable loss of livestock. The majority of the destruction has occurred in the south, particularly in Sancheong county, where six people have died and seven are missing. Additionally, casualties have been reported in northern mountainous regions near Seoul, as well as in western and northern areas. Serious landslide warnings have been issued nationwide, and the government initiated a multi-agency recovery effort on Sunday.
