Discerning a Difference: Ellen DeGeneres relocates to the UK in response to Donald Trump’s influence | Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres has confirmed her decision to move to the United Kingdom was influenced by the political climate during Donald Trump’s presidency. DeGeneres disclosed this information during her first public speaking event in the UK since leaving the United States. At the event held at Cheltenham’s Everyman Theatre, broadcaster Richard Bacon inquired about the reason behind her relocation. She responded, “We arrived the day before the election and found out the news the next morning, so we decided to stay.”

DeGeneres, along with her wife Portia de Rossi, moved to a house in the Cotswolds in 2024 following the conclusion of her long-running talk show and her final tour in the US. It was reported at the time that her move was permanent, and sources cited Donald Trump as the motivation, though DeGeneres had not confirmed this until now.

She described her new home as “beautiful,” highlighting the cleanliness of the environment and overall better treatment of animals and people compared to the US. DeGeneres also expressed concern for the state of LGBTQ+ rights in the U.S., referencing the efforts by some groups to repeal same-sex marriage legislation. This concern even led her to consider marrying again in the UK, should such legislation be overturned.

DeGeneres also addressed the controversy surrounding her talk show, which ended amid declining ratings and accusations of fostering a toxic work environment. She admitted that she might have come across as mean due to her direct and blunt nature, and she acknowledged it was an “unpleasant way” to end her show.
