On Friday, a bus traveling from Lima to La Merced encountered a fatal accident, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 individuals and injuries to approximately 30 others. This incident, confirmed by officials, involved the bus veering off the road and falling into a ravine in the district of Palca within Peru. Health director Clifor Curipaco, hailing from the Junin region, and health official Aldo Tineo shared this account, specifying the ongoing identification process of the victims.
The wreck involved a double-decker bus operated by Expreso Molina Líder Internacional, carrying over 60 passengers. The bus ended up upside down adjacent to a river. Graphic footage of the scene, showcased on local television, revealed the bus to be severely damaged, split into two segments.
Bus crashes, unfortunately, are not unheard of in Peru, with this incident marking not the first fatal bus accident in 2024. In January of the same year, a similar tragedy occurred when a bus plunged into a river, claiming the lives of 6 and leaving 32 injured. According to police records, the country witnessed around 3,173 deaths due to traffic accidents throughout the year. The Attorney General’s Office attributes these incidents primarily to recklessness, excessive speed, and the deteriorating condition of the roads.
Investigations are currently underway to determine the precise cause of this particular accident. Sean Sinico served as the editor for this piece.
