Greece is currently facing wildfires that have caused devastation to homes and prompted evacuations for the second consecutive day. The country is receiving aid from Czech firefighters and anticipates the arrival of Italian aircraft on Sunday. The fires are spreading in the Peloponnese region, as well as on the islands of Evia and Kythera. While forecasted strong winds are expected to subside in most areas, there are concerns about the “worrying” wind conditions on Kythera. The island’s inhabitants were sent evacuation messages, and the fires have significantly damaged properties, including a monastery. The fight against the fires on Kythera involves dozens of firefighters, three helicopters, and two aircraft. Greece has requested assistance from EU allies and is already receiving support from the Czech Republic. Eleven regions in Greece are currently at a very high risk of fires. The flames have also affected other areas, including Evia near Athens, where thousands of farm animals have perished. On Crete, fires that destroyed several houses and a church have largely been contained. The heatwave conditions, with temperatures reaching over 40 degrees Celsius, have persisted for almost a week, but are expected to ease from Monday.
