The Vatican has issued an update regarding the health of Pope Francis. According to their latest statement, the Pontiff is in a critical condition following a prolonged and severe asthmatic respiratory crisis, during which he required high levels of oxygen. Hospitalized for a week now, Francis is battling a complicated lung infection.
The Vatican also mentioned that the Pope has undergone blood transfusions after it was discovered that he has a condition linked to anemia. Despite feeling more pain than the previous day, Pope Francis remains alert and has been seated in an armchair. The medical prognosis is currently unpredictable, according to the statement.
Earlier reports from the doctors treating Francis revealed that he has contracted pneumonia, in addition to his earlier respiratory tract infection. His health condition remains precarious, and it is expected that he will stay in the hospital for at least another week.
Pope Francis, who has been suffering from chronic lung disease, was admitted to Gemelli hospital in Rome on February 14th, following an aggravation of his bronchitis. Actions taken by the medical team include diagnosing a complex viral, bacterial, and fungal respiratory tract infection, as well as the onset of pneumonia in both of his lungs.
The treatment prescribed for Francis includes “absolute rest” along with a combination of cortisone, antibiotics, and supplemental oxygen when necessary. Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the head of medicine and surgery at Gemelli hospital, highlighted that the greatest risk to the Pope’s health is the potential for germs from his respiratory system to enter his bloodstream, which could cause sepsis, a serious condition that can lead to organ failure and death.
Dr. Alfieri emphasized that Pope Francis is aware of the danger he faces and has urged the medical team to convey this information.
