Voting is currently taking place in an election that many consider to be Germany’s most important in recent history. Friedrich Merz, the head of the Christian Democratic party, is likely to become the country’s tenth Chancellor. The extreme-right AfD party is expected to come in second place.
“There is a high level of anxiety about this election and the global scenario, the security situation in Europe, the actions of Donald Trump’s administration, and the conflict in Ukraine… There is a strong recognition that Germany has entered into a new world order with Trump,” states France24’s Europe Editor, Armen Georgian, who is reporting from Berlin.
