The condition of Pope Francis remains critical, with him now exhibiting an “initial, mild” kidney issue – but he is described as “vigilant” and participated in Mass while hospitalized along with those caring for him.

The Vatican reported that Francis has not experienced any further “respiratory crises” since Saturday night.

A kidney issue has been identified, with blood tests revealing “an initial, mild, renal insufficiency,” which is under control according to the update.

The 88-year-old Pope is still receiving “high-flow oxygen therapy” through his nose, with his hemoglobin levels improving following blood transfusions on Saturday.

Pope Francis has been at Rome’s Gemelli hospital since 14 February, being treated for double pneumonia and chronic bronchitis.

Sunday evening’s statement affirmed he was “vigilant and well-oriented,” with the prognosis remaining “cautious” due to the complexity of his case.

“During the morning, in the apartment set up on the 10th floor, he participated in the Holy Mass alongside those who are taking care of him throughout his hospitalization,” the update added.

On Sunday morning, the Pope was reported to have had a “tranquil” night and it was confirmed that he would not lead prayers for the second consecutive week.

As an alternative, Francis, who has been Pope since 2013, had prepared a message to be read on his behalf during the Angelus.

‘I ask you to pray for me’

The Pope’s message stated: “I am continuing my hospitalization at the Gemelli Hospital with confidence, undergoing the necessary treatment – and rest is also part of therapy!

“I sincerely thank the doctors and healthcare providers at this hospital for their attention and the dedication with which they serve the sick.

“In recent days, I have received many messages of affection, and I have been especially moved by the letters and drawings from children.

“Thank you for your closeness and for the prayers of comfort I have received from around the world! I entrust you all to the intercession of Mary, and I ask for your prayers for me.”

The message is understood to have been written in recent days.

On Saturday night, the Vatican reported that the Pope was in a critical condition after a “prolonged respiratory crisis” that necessitated a high flow of oxygen.

There were blood transfusions after tests indicated thrombocytopenia, which is associated with anemia.

Millions across the globe are concerned about his increasing frailty, and this has sparked speculation about a possible resignation.
