Women-led radio station in Afghanistan is set to resume broadcasting following the lifting of a Taliban-imposed suspension.

An Afghan radio station, entirely run by Afghan women, is set to resume broadcasts after the Taliban lifted a suspension imposed over allegations of collaboration with a foreign TV channel. Radio Begum, which launched on International Women’s Day in March 2021, just five months before the Taliban took control, had been subject to this suspension. The station’s sister satellite channel, Begum TV, operates from France and provides educational content on Afghanistan’s school curriculum from grades seven through 12. The Taliban has previously banned education for women and girls beyond the sixth grade. The suspension on Radio Begum was lifted after the station made commitments to adhere to “the principles of journalism and the regulations of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” and to avoid future violations, according to the country’s Information and Culture Ministry.
