Australia’s foreign minister, Penny Wong, has joined other nations in condemning Israel’s plans to expand control over Gaza in a new ground operation. She warning this risks breaking international law and endangering hostages and civilians. Wong, along with the foreign ministers from Germany, Italy, New Zealand, and the UK, released a joint statement on Saturday, criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plans to control Gaza City. They assert that these plans could exacerbate an already dire situation, as the threat of a famine in Gaza is growing. The joint statement called for Hamas and the Israeli government to collaborate with the international community to end the conflict through a permanent ceasefire. It also demanded Hamas release all hostages without delay and treat them humanely.
Moreover, it was stated that Israel should ensure the exclusion of international humanitarian organizations is not implemented. Such action would be seen as an egregious signal. The ministers’ statements align with international cries of outrage over Israel’s plans, which are reportedly causing mass displacement among Palestinians.
