Chris Hemsworth Reveals Discovering His Higher Alzheimer’s Risk Was a Life “Gear Shift”
Chris Hemsworth shared with Sky News the profound impact discovering he has a higher genetic risk for Alzheimer’s has had on his life. The Australian actor, known for his roles in Thor, Furiosa, and Transformers, found out during a genetic test on the National Geographic show Limitless: Live Better Now that he carries two copies of the APOE4 gene, making him eight to ten times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than the average person.
Hemsworth initially participated in the show to take on new experiences, but the test revealed an unexpected truth that two copies of the APOE4 gene are carried by one in every 50 people. Research indicates that nearly all double carriers exhibit key early signs of the disease, which leads to dementia, by the age of 55. Despite the findings, Hemsworth emphasized that everyone’s risk is different and that lifestyle changes can mitigate risk factors—regardless of whether you carry the gene. These changes include not smoking, reducing alcohol intake, regular exercise, monitoring cholesterol and blood pressure, and eating a balanced diet.
Reflecting on the discovery, Hemsworth told Sky News that it prompted a thorough life examination. He described a feeling of disconnection from his previously held identity, sparking deeper questions about his life’s purpose and fulfillment.
Moreover, the Australian actor noted a stark difference in his participation between the first and second seasons of Limitless: Live Better Now. In the first season, Hemsworth felt out of place among experts, given his lack of knowledge on the topics discussed. In contrast, during the second season, he was more invested, taking a more active role in the show’s production and research. Confronting his genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s, Hemsworth approached the challenge with a newfound seriousness and a wish to use as much time as possible with loved ones.
National Geographic’s Limitless: Live Better Now, which explores ways to improve brain and body health through endurance and learning new skills, is available for streaming on Disney+ starting August 15th. Hemsworth’s journey with the show, including his drumming performance with Ed Sheeran, is highlighted as a testament to overcoming personal fears and pushing beyond one’s comfort zone.
