The Premier of Victoria, Jacinta Allan, has strongly criticized individuals who participated in a neo-Nazi march in Melbourne in the early hours of Saturday. According to police reports, approximately 100 individuals, dressed in black with face coverings, marched through the Melbourne Central Business District, with some carrying Australian flags and chanting. Police responded to what they termed a “pop-up protest” around 12:40 am Saturday, with the group later dispersing at Flagstaff Gardens around 1:25 am.
Premier Allan denounced the participants, labeling them as “Nazis” who do not belong in the country and highlighted their preference for hiding under masks in the dark. She thanked the police for maintaining public order and emphasized her support for giving law enforcement more powers, which she plans to introduce legislation for, allowing them to unmask individuals at protests. Allan stated that while the government is not afraid of these individuals, they will not be tolerated.
During the protest, it was alleged that a 26-year-old homeless man confronted the group and was assaulted. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the investigation into the assault continues. No arrests were made during the protest, but the police emphasized their commitment to preventing hate-based activities. In a related event at Bacchus Marsh train station, police monitored a planned gathering without any violent incidents or arrests.
The story includes footage showing the group marching in uniform, led by individuals carrying a banner and flags, and playing music. The Premier’s condemnation reflects a broader societal stance against hate-based and neo-Nazi activities, with legal measures under consideration to address such incidents more effectively.
