In Elmar Kalb's workshop in Dornbirn, Austria, the carpenter typically crafts objects found in any woodworker's portfolio: benches, tables, chairs, wooden trays, and bookshelves. However, in 2018, Kalb embarked on a distinct project: designing flute cases with a twist.
This new venture was inspired by an incident with Korean flautist Jasmine Choi, who had a mishap with her flute when it slipped from her bag at an airport security check, sustaining damage upon impact with the ground.
Recognizing a common problem, Kalb began developing a flute case that would not only protect the instrument from accidental shocks but also secure it firmly within. His innovation combines carbon fibers and wood to create a case that is durable yet lightweight.
Crucial to Kalb’s design is a system of adjustable clips that firmly hold the flute in place, accommodating different models of the instrument.
Jasmine Choi, now a proud owner of one of Kalb’s “smart cases,” is among a group of musicians who have benefited from his work. Stefan Tomaschitz, principal flutist with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, along with four colleagues, visited Kalb’s workshop in August to perform in appreciation of his protective invention, which has safeguarded his expensive flute valued at up to €100,000 for over a year.
For Tomaschitz, the security afforded by Kalb’s case is a huge advantage, especially considering the traditional method of storing flutes in unsecured cases, which had been a concern for insurance companies. He finds peace of mind and the ability to focus on his music, knowing his instrument is well-protected.
