Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated on Wednesday that Israel and Kurdish fighters must refrain from actions threatening Syria’s security and stability.

In a news conference with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani in Ankara, Fidan accused Israel and the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) of weakening Syria’s efforts to rebuild after over a decade of civil war.

Fidan claimed that Israel has “exacerbated certain challenges” in Syria and cautioned that Israeli security should not come at the expense of neighboring countries’ security.

Rather, our neighboring countries should be prosperous and secure. Efforts to destabilize these countries could ignite additional regional crises.

Following the displacement of former President Bashar al-Assad by Islamist-led insurgents in December, the interim government in Damascus has faced difficulties maintaining stability and healing the nearly 14-year civil war.

Hundreds have been killed in clashes in the southern province of Suwayda, between government forces and local Bedouin tribesmen on one side, and fighters from the Druze minority on the other.

Tensions have also risen between the central government and the US-allied SDF controlling north-eastern Syria.
