In his daily update, the UN Spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, noted that ongoing issues such as delays, bottlenecks at checkpoints, and disturbances during the loading of goods at transit points are hindering the UN and its partners’ efforts to effectively deliver aid on a large scale. He emphasized the importance of allowing humanitarian operations to reach the most vulnerable populations using community-based methods.
Stéphane Dujarric also drew attention to the recent situation in Rafah, where the Red Cross Field Hospital treated over 4,500 injured individuals between May 27 and August 8. Most of these injuries occurred while people were trying to access food distribution locations, with incidents of stampedes, theft, and violence following the reception of essential food supplies.
Out of 12 aid missions that required coordination with Israeli authorities on Thursday, only five were able to proceed without any issues. The remaining seven missions either got canceled by the organizers or encountered obstacles, with three of them being completed after initial hindrances. These included the retrieval of food assistance from Zikim and Kerem Shalom/Karem Abu Salem crossings.
The spokesperson also highlit an escalating starvation crisis, with a concerning rise in the number of deaths, especially among children. Hospitals are overwhelmed with malnutrition cases, and many facilities have been reported to lack bedspace for patients. Energy shortages are further exacerbating the situation, as cooking gas has been unavailable in Gaza’s markets for months, and firewood has become a financial burden.
Stéphane Dujarric also highlighted the necessity to safeguard civilians in the event of expanded military actions in Gaza City. He underscored that individuals fleeing must be protected, their basic needs met, and they must be able to return voluntarily when conditions permit. Moreover, he restated the UN’s long-standing demand for the immediate and unconditional release of hostages in the Strip.
