Ted Hui, a former pro-democracy legislator in Hong Kong who is wanted by authorities, has been granted asylum in Australia. In a social media post, Hui expressed his gratitude to the Australian government for recognizing the need for asylum and providing protection to him, his wife, children, and parents. Hui is a high-profile participant in the pro-democracy protests that took place in Hong Kong in 2019 and is now a solicitor in Adelaide. He is one of several overseas activists targeted by police bounties in 2023, with Hong Kong authorities offering HK$1m (A$196,000) for information about their whereabouts. Hui has encouraged Australia to do more to support Hong Kong activists who remain jailed, such as media mogul Jimmy Lai.
