On Saturday, Australia granted asylum to pro-democracy Hong Kong activist Ted Hui, who is facing criminal charges related to the 2019 protests in the Chinese city. Hui confirmed his asylum in a social media post, stating that his application, along with that of his family members, was approved by the Australian Department of Home Affairs on Friday. He expressed gratitude to the Australian government for recognizing their need for asylum and providing protection.
Hui is one of several pro-democracy activists who have fled Hong Kong after facing criminal charges. The activists have been targeted by police bounties of HK$1 million each. In a social media post, Hui urged the Australian government to support other Hong Kong activists who remain jailed, emphasizing the need to speak up for their humanity.
Hui, a former Democratic Party lawmaker, left Hong Kong in 2020 and is a prominent critic of both China and the Hong Kong authorities. He shared his mixed emotions about his asylum on Facebook, noting the bittersweet nature of leaving his hometown due to political persecution. While immigrants can always return to visit relatives, he acknowledged that exiles have no home.
