Quentin Tarantino discusses his favorite of his own films in response to the ongoing debate in cinema circles about the top Tarantino movie.

It’s a topic widely debated in the film industry: which Quentin Tarantino movie is the best? The legendary director has now shared his own thoughts on the matter, even revealing his personal favorite and which of his films he was “born to make.” Tarantino, in a recent podcast appearance, stated that Inglourious Basterds, his 2009 World War II drama, is the best among his nine films. However, he admits that Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, released in 2019, holds a special place in his heart as his favorite.

Tarantino said, “But I think Kill Bill is the ultimate Quentin movie, like nobody else could’ve made it.” He further explained how Kill Bill, a two-part martial arts thriller, is deeply rooted in his own thoughts, loves, and obsessions. “So, I think Kill Bill is the movie I’m born to make, I think Inglourious Basterds is my masterpiece, but Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood is my favorite.”

Known for writing and directing all his films since his 1992 debut Reservoir Dogs, Tarantino also shared his views on screenplays. He considers the script for Inglourious Basterds to be his best, with Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood closely following. However, when it comes to directing, Tarantino believes that Hateful Eight showcases his best work, with the material already solid and him focusing on what he sees as his best “servicing” of the material as a director.

Tarantino has also made it clear that he will not be directing the sequel to Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, which will be helmed by David Fincher. Tarantino remains involved as the writer and producer. “I think me and David Fincher are the two best directors,” said Tarantino. “So the idea that David Fincher wants to adapt my work is really something else.”

Tarantino is currently working on a play set to open in the West End of London in 2026 before he returns to direct his final film. He has consistently expressed his intention to retire after completing his 10th film, indicating his commitment to not letting his final movie become what he refers to as “horrible last movies.”

On the podcast, Tarantino elaborated on his decision not to direct the sequel to Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, stating that he felt “unenthused” about the project as it was a sequel, and he prefers to venture into uncharted territory. He abandoned plans for his final film, The Movie Critic, because he felt it was too similar to his previous work. “The Movie Critic, there was nothing to figure out,” he said. “It was too much like the last one.”
