Emmanuel Macron has emphasized that a peace deal with Russia should not involve Ukraine surrendering to Russia. This comes after Donald Trump claimed that Vladimir Putin wants to end the ongoing conflict. The French and US presidents met on the occasion of the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with Macron stating that they made significant progress in their discussions. Macron also called for increased European efforts in strengthening defense but stressed that Russia is the aggressor and violated peace. He emphasized that any peace agreement should ensure Ukraine’s sovereignty and allow for negotiations about issues affecting the country. Mystifyingly, Trump added that Putin would have no issue with the possible deployment of European military forces in peacekeeping efforts, after seeking clarification from him. Macron expressed hope in the possibility of negotiations, and both leaders showed interest in ending the war as soon as possible.
