Three individuals lost their lives, and two others were taken to the hospital after a boat capsized in New York City on Sunday, claimed the U.S. Coast Guard. One person is now presumed dead. According to the police, one of the hospitalized individuals was in critical condition on Monday, the day after the speedboat started taking on water 5 miles (8km) southeast of Breezy Point, which is a neighborhood at the tip of Queens’ Rockaway peninsula. The other victim was in stable condition. Coast Guard rescue crews responded to assist the boaters on Sunday, but ended their search on Monday evening after failing to find Vernon Glasford, a 52-year-old from the Bronx. Captain Jonathan Andrechik, the commander of Coast Guard sector New York, expressed his deepest sympathies to Glasford’s family. The search involved numerous agencies, including the New York police and fire departments, New Jersey’s state police, and the Sandy Hook Pilots. The search covered 842 sq miles (2,181 sq kilometers) over 30 hours and involved helicopters, planes, ships, and boats, reported the Coast Guard. The cause of the sinking is still under investigation.
