The US vice president, JD Vance, stated that European countries will need to take on the main responsibility for ensuring Ukraine’s security if a peace deal is reached to end the conflict with Russia. In a Fox News interview, Vance emphasized that the US should not bear the entire burden of securing Ukraine’s post-war security and that Europe should play a leading role in this regard. He also mentioned that the US is willing to provide support, but the specifics will depend on the necessary steps to stop the war. The issue of post-war security guarantees for Ukraine has been a central concern in Trump’s efforts to resolve the conflict. Although the US has ruled out NATO membership for Ukraine, discussions regarding alternative security guarantees, similar to the alliance’s collective defense mandate, have been proposed. However, the Russians have insisted on being included in negotiations on security guarantees, warning that excluding Moscow would hinder progress towards a resolution.
