Diana Abbott has revealed her advice to her friend Jeremy Corbyn against establishing a new political party. Abbott, a Labour MP, argues that new parties face significant challenges in a first-past-the-post electoral system. Expressing her views at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, Abbott shared that she had counselled Corbyn ahead of the launch of his new left-wing party, warning of the difficulties in winning seats under the current system. She described the party’s potential to attract votes from those disillusioned with Labour but noted her belief in the party’s potential to surpass expectations, despite the odds against it. Abbott, who is currently suspended from Labour following controversial comments on racism, also commented on the combination of Corbyn and Zarah Sultana, acknowledging their energy and the attraction they may have for non-traditional left-wing voters. She remains optimistic about the impact Corbyn’s party could have, despite the challenges they face.
