In the Bierzo region of León, the small village of Lusio was completely destroyed by fire on 17 August, with flames fueled by strong dry winds consuming its ancient homes. The inhabitants were evacuated quickly and upon their return, they were met with nothing but ashes, debris, and silence where their community once flourished.
Over 20 major fires are still raging across the regions of Galicia, Castile and León, and Extremadura. Thousands of firefighters, including reinforcements from France, Italy, Slovakia, and the Netherlands, are tirelessly working to combat the fires under extremely harsh conditions.
Amidst mounting pressure on the authorities to improve fire prevention measures, the police have arrested 23 individuals suspected of arson. Scientists have connected these devastating fires to the increasingly severe climate conditions.
