Uganda agrees to accept deported migrants from the US without criminal records
Uganda has declared that it will not accept unaccompanied minors and prefers migrants with African nationalities.
Uganda’s foreign affairs ministry stated that the two countries are still working on the details, but confirmed that the deal has been finalized.
Similar deals have been reached with Honduras, as reported by CBS News.
Last month, 13 men labeled as dangerous criminals were deported to Eswatini and South Sudan. Rwanda has reportedly accepted 250 migrants from the US.
President Donald Trump has been cracking down on undocumented migrants since returning to office, which was a key campaign promise and drew strong support.
However, the Supreme Court approved efforts to deport migrants to countries other than their homeland in June. Human rights organizations have raised concerns that these removals could violate international law.
Uganda already hosts around two million asylum seekers from neighboring countries including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan and South Sudan.
