Ultra Violette, a sunscreen company, is pulling its product Lean Screen Skinscreen from the market due to inconsistent SPF results. The co-founders, Ava Chandler-Matthews and Bec Jefferd, issued a statement apologizing to customers and instructing them to stop using the product. The company conducted additional tests after Choice published an investigation into the SPF claims of popular sunscreen brands in June. Choice’s test showed that the Ultra Violette product had an SPF result of only 4 or 5 compared to its claimed SPF 50+.
Ultra Violette had initially disputed Choice’s findings. However, Chandler-Matthews and Jefferd stated that the results of their own additional tests revealed significant variability in SPF results. The company commissioned eight different tests from independent laboratories, and the results ranged from 4 to 64. The founders deemed the results unsatisfactory and decided to withdraw the product.
The choice CEO, Ashley de Silva, emphasized the importance of Choice’s investigation and questioned the regulation and testing of sunscreen in Australia. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is currently investigating sunscreen testing requirements and considering alternative methods for more reliable results.
