There was a significant 7.5-magnitude earthquake in the South Atlantic Ocean on Thursday, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.

The earthquake occurred at 10:16 p.m. Eastern, as shown by the agency’s data.

Earlier, U.S.G.S. data had stated the magnitude as 8.0.

As seismologists examine the available data, they may adjust the earthquake’s reported magnitude. The U.S.G.S. scientists may also update the shake-severity map based on any additional details collected about the earthquake.
