At least four construction workers died, and several others sustained injuries when a section of an elevated highway collapsed in South Korea recently. The incident occurred in Anseong, located approximately 65 kilometers south of the capital city of Seoul, where construction was still underway on the 50-meter-long beams that were supporting the structure. Among the deceased, two were Chinese nationals and two were South Korean. At least one of the injured workers is also Chinese. Local fire officials stated that all ten workers were on the deck when it collapsed, falling from both sides. The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined. Hyundai Engineering, the main contractor for the project, has expressed their sincere apologies to the affected parties and is collaborating with authorities to investigate the incident. This incident highlights the ongoing workplace safety issues in South Korea, where thousands of work-related deaths have been reported since 2020. Despite legislation aimed at addressing these safety concerns in 2022, fatalities continue to occur, including the deaths of six individuals at a hotel construction site in Busan earlier in February.
