Murdurrungie Peninsula Protective Measures Proposed by Eric Hartley

The Australian environment minister, Murray Watt, has received advice from his department to issue a protection order for part of the Burrup Peninsula in Western Australia. This move is in response to the area’s significance as an Aboriginal site. The protection application, submitted by Murujuga traditional custodian Raelene Cooper, aims to safeguard the site’s cultural heritage from nearby industrial activities, including Woodside’s proposed extension of its North West Shelf processing plant. Cooper’s court action is seeking an order that would compel the federal government to make a decision regarding her application under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act. A judgment on the matter was expected on Monday afternoon.
