Many African residents in Germany were anxiously anticipating the results of the German elections, particularly after migration became a significant issue in the campaign. There were widespread concerns that a victory for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party could lead to mass deportations.
However, Friedrich Merz, the leader of the center-right Christian Democratic alliance (CDU/CSU), who is poised to become the German chancellor after his party’s victory, has also taken a firm stance on migration. Merz has called for a “fundamental” overhaul of asylum rules and the introduction of permanent border control, following a fatal stabbing incident in the German city of Aschaffenburg. The suspect, a 28-year-old Afghan, was already subject to a deportation order.
The CDU/CSU garnered around 29% of the votes, while the AfD secured 20.8% of the vote – their strongest-ever result at the federal level. Although the AfD is likely to be sidelined from coalition talks, their growing support is of concern to some Africans.
Despite these concerns, some analysts believe that the outcome of the election should alleviate anxiety among African immigrants. Dr. Oluwole Ojewale, a foreign policy analyst, suggests that the election results demonstrate a desire to curb the rising influence of the far-right party, and that Germany continues to be open for business and collaboration with African countries.
Germany has adopted reforms to its immigration law to attract skilled African workers and has launched initiatives to encourage the voluntary repatriation of irregular migrants. An advisory center has helped over 5,000 Ghanaian migrants return to their homeland.
Although some African migrants worry about stricter border controls and the potential impact on migration, Ojewale suggests that African immigrants should not panic, as Merz’s Christian Democratic party is a globalist party with a history of support for foreign policy initiatives that benefit Africa.
Additionally, Germany’s skilled labor shortage may still provide opportunities for African migrants, as the country seeks to welcome talented and qualified individuals despite its tougher stance on immigration.
As for Germany’s future direction, while there may be some changes in policy towards Africa, it is anticipated that the new government will continue to promote trade and partnership between African nations and Germany.
