The incident forced the convoy to halt abruptly and heightened tensions just days before provincial elections in Buenos Aires and ahead of the October midterm elections.
President Milei was swiftly escorted from the scene by his security detail, without any injuries. The incident happened while he was riding in the back of a pickup truck, greeting supporters in Lomas de Zamora, a city located 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of the capital. The crowd threw plants, rocks, and bottles at his vehicle.
The elections will serve as a measure of Milei’s popularity and the success of his policies since he was elected in 2023 to address the country’s fiscal deficits and rampant inflation.
Who else was in the motorcade?
The president was accompanied by his sister, Karina Milei, and other government officials in the convoy. They quickly departed the area.
“Out with Milei!” protesters chanted. Milei retreated into the vehicle as security guards attempted to protect him from debris.
Following this, a confrontation erupted between the supporters and detractors of the libertarian politician.
A woman, a supporter of Milei, sustained rib injuries and was transported to a hospital by ambulance.
Moments before the altercation, the president had addressed a controversy ignited by leaked recordings from the former head of the disability agency, Diego Spagnuolo.
In the recordings, Spagnuolo indicated that Karina Milei embezzled funds intended for people with disabilities.
