All NATO member states are expected to meet the 2% GDP defense spending target this year, according to a new NATO report, though only three currently meet the new goal of 3.5%. Previously lagging countries such as Spain, Italy, and Belgium have increased their defense spending to levels agreed upon at the 2014 NATO summit. The report, published in Brussels, indicates that countries such as Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia are currently meeting the higher 3.5% target, while the United States is projected to spend 3.22% of GDP on defense this year. German figures are unavailable but the government has indicated they will meet the target once the budget is passed. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed the increase in defense spending but emphasized the need to convert that money into genuine military capability.
