Kim Jong Un Offers Condolences to Families of North Korean Soldiers Who Died Fighting in Russia

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has expressed grief for the loss of his troops who died while fighting alongside Russia in Ukraine.

Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, organized a meeting with the families of soldiers who died fighting for Russia in Ukraine. According to state media, he expressed his condolences to those present, acknowledging the “unbearable pain” they have endured and promised to provide the bereaved families with a comfortable and fulfilling life.
Kim’s meeting with the families of fallen soldiers was the second time within the same month. However, the exact number of North Korean troops killed in Ukraine remains unconfirmed, with estimates suggesting that several hundred were killed and thousands more were injured.
During the meeting, Kim stated, “I organized this meeting to console the families of our heroic soldiers and alleviate their sorrow and anguish even if only a little.”
To honor the deceased soldiers, Kim plans to construct a monument in the capital, Pyongyang, and name a new street after them. Additionally, state support will be provided to the children of the soldiers who lost their lives in the conflict.
Kim expressed his deep sorrow for the children who lost their fathers, stating, “Our heart breaks and aches for these children who have lost their fathers.” He also vowed to train the children to become stalwart and courageous fighters like their fathers.
Reports indicate that North Korea sent over 10,000 soldiers to Russia in 2024, primarily to the Kursk region, along with artillery shells, missiles, and rocket systems. Images released by state media showed Kim embracing a returned soldier and paying his respects to fallen troops.
Kim is expected to stand alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping during a military parade in Beijing next week, marking the end of World War II. The leader’s relationship with Putin has strengthened since the two signed a military alliance in 2024.
