Fire incident at Indonesian government structure results in three fatalities; protesters held accountable | Updates on Protests

At least three individuals have lost their lives and several have been injured in a fire incident in Sulawesi island, which is attributed to protesters.

At least three individuals have lost their lives, and five others are injured in a fire incident at a regional parliament building in eastern Indonesias Makassar capital, during widespread demonstrations that have been unsettling the Southeast Asian country.
Indonesia’s disaster management agency confirmed the deaths following the evening fire on Friday. They stated that two victims died at the scene, and one died in the hospital-eye were trapped in the burning building.
Accordings to Rahmat Mappatoba, Secretary of Makassar city council, protesters stormed the office and set the building on fire.
The incident left several individuals injured, now receiving treatment in the hospital. The fire has since been brought under control.
Indonesia has seen protests erupt in major cities, including Jakarta, triggered by the death of a motorcycle delivery driver who was allegedly run over by a police tactical vehicle during demonstrations over low wages and perceived opulent perks for government officials.
In West Java’s capital city of Bandung, commercial buildings, including a bank and a restaurant, were set ablaze on Friday:
In Jakarta, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the headquarters of the elite Mobile Brigade Corp (Brimob) paramilitary police unit accused of killing motorcycle delivery driver Affan Kuniawan. Demonstrators threw stones and firecrackers, and the police responded with tear gas as they attempted to establish a blockade to prevent the protesters.
On Saturday, young protesters were reported gathering in Jakarta and trying to reach the Brimob headquarters but were stopped by a barricade.
The number of detentions in connection with the driver’s death has now reached seven. Over 200 people have reportedly been injured in the protests, according to Tempo news site.
These are the largest and most violent protests since Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto took office, and they pose a significant challenge less than one year into his presidency.
President Prabowo has called for calm, ordered an investigation into the unrest, visited the family of the slain delivery driver and also warned that the demonstrations “were leading to anarchic actions”.
