A recent anti-immigration protest in Melbourne featured a neo-Nazi speaker and was condemned by the federal government. The protest was organized under the banner March for Australia and took place in state capitals across the country.
While some politicians, including Pauline Hanson and Bob Katter, attended the protests, the marches were promoted by neo-Nazis and anti-lockdown groups. Protesters gathered outside Flinders Street station, and a counter-demonstration consisted of pro-Palestine and antifascist groups.
Victoria police attempted to keep the two rallies separate, but they eventually met, resulting in a volatile verbal confrontation, with some protesters throwing objects at each other. Police used riot gear and pepper spray to push back the antifascist protesters.
The anti-immigration rally eventually reached state parliament, where speakers, including neo-Nazi Thomas Sewell, stated that immigration posed a threat to the nation’s future.
The Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan had earlier criticized the protests, while the federal opposition leader Sussan Ley stated that there was no place for violence, racism, or intimidation in society.
