Regional Security
A European Commission leader’s plane faced GPS jamming, potentially due to Russian interference, as it prepared to land in Bulgaria, as per an EU spokesperson’s remarks on Monday.
“We can indeed confirm GPS jamming. However, the plane safely landed in Bulgaria. We have received information from Bulgarian authorities suggesting this interference was caused by Russia,” the EU spokesperson stated.
In response, the EU will deploy additional satellites in low Earth orbit to bolster its GPS interference response capabilities, as declared by EU Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius following the incident.
Germany does not expect Russian aggression on NATO territories under the guise of Moscow’s upcoming Zapad military exercises, but remains vigilant, reported the country’s highest military officer, Carsten Breuer.
Politics and diplomacy
Russian President Vladimir Putin blamed Western nations for inciting conflict in Ukraine, during his address at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry expressed surprise that the SCO statement did not reference “the largest war of aggression in Europe since World War II,” referring to Russia’s conflict in Ukraine.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius criticized recent statements by the EU’s Ursula von der Leyen regarding the potential deployment of European troops to Ukraine, arguing such discussions should be reserved for negotiation tables with involved parties.
The EU prefers diplomacy over escalation regarding tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump due in part to security concerns, affirmed European Council President Antonio Costa in a speech on Monday.
“We definitely do not celebrate the resumption of tariffs. Yet, escalating tensions with a key ally over tariffs while facing threats on our Eastern border would have been an irresponsible risk,” Costa said.
France will host a “Coalition of the Willing” meeting, comprising nations supporting Ukraine, on Thursday, as announced by the French presidency.
