Belgium Set to Acknowledge Palestine at UN General Assembly: Foreign Minister | Israel-Palestine Conflict Updates

Belgium to Recognize Palestine at UNGA; Imposes Sanctions on Israel

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot announced that Belgium will acknowledge the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly this month, adding to the number of countries recognizing Palestinian statehood. This move follows a similar announcement by French President Emmanuel Macron in July. Alongside the recognition, Belgium plans to impose 12 “firm sanctions” on Israel, including banning imports from Israeli settlements and reviewing public procurement policies involving Israeli companies. Prevot cited the humanitarian crisis in Palestine, especially in Gaza, as the reason for these actions. To date, 147 countries, representing 75% of UN members, have acknowledged Palestinian statehood. This development comes amid ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in significant casualties and injuries, and follows a Belgian referral of a war crimes complaint against Israeli soldiers to the International Criminal Court in July.
