Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin have initiated bilateral discussions in Beijing, ahead of a grand military parade in the Chinese capital. Putin commended the relationship between the two nations, describing it as being on an “unprecedented level” and noting that the close communication between the countries mirrors the strategic nature of Russian-Chinese ties. In response, Xi stated that China-Russia relations have been resilient, an that Beijing is willing to collaborate with Moscow to “promote the construction of a more just and reasonable global governance system.”
Wednesday’s military parade marks the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender at the conclusion of World War Two and comes at a time when Xi aims to present Beijing as an international power – not only as the world’s second-biggest economy, but also as a diplomatic heavyweight. China has emerged as a reliable trading partner while US President Donald Trump’s tariffs have disrupted economic relationships.
During the meeting, both leaders criticized Western governments, with Xi criticizing the “bullying behavior” of certain countries, indirectly referencing the US. Meanwhile, Putin defended Russia’s Ukraine invasion, attributing the conflict to Western provocation. The two leaders convened at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Tuesday, as reported by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
