Graham Greene, the renowned Canadian First Nations actor known for his roles in films such as Dances With Wolves, has passed away at the age of 73, according to his manager.
In a statement to CBC News, Gerry Jordan sadly announced the peaceful departure of the esteemed actor, who died of natural causes. Greene, a member of the Oneida Nation and part of the Six Nations Reserve in southern Ontario, was recognized with an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Kicking Bird in Kevin Costner’s 1990 epic western film.
Before embarking on his acting career in the UK during the 1970s, Greene worked as a draftsman, civil technologist, steelworker, and even a member of a rock band’s crew. Within a 2012 interview with Playback, a Canadian publication, Greene emphasized the importance of theatre in providing a solid foundation for acting. He believed that theatre’s discipline is essential for building characters, a skill not readily available in film productions.
Greene’s breakthrough came in 1990 when he portrayed Kicking Bird, a Lakota medicine man, in Dances With Wolves, earning him widespread acclaim. He also made notable appearances in Thunderheart (1992), The Green Mile (1999), Die Hard With A Vengeance (1995), Maverick (1994), The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), and Wind River (2017). Throughout his illustrious career, he received many accolades, including the Earle Grey Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Academy of Canadian Film and Television in 2004 and induction into the Order of Canada in 2016, which is the country’s second-highest civilian honour.
