US President Donald Trump announced he is expecting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to visit Washington on Friday to sign a “very big deal.” Sources have confirmed that Ukraine and the United States have agreed upon a draft broad minerals deal, which may help ease tensions between Trump and Zelenskyy. The deal will see the US jointly develop Ukraine’s mineral wealth, with revenues going to a new fund shared by both countries, according to senior Ukrainian officials. However, the draft agreement does not include the security guarantees Ukraine had wanted, and it is unclear what role the US will play in regard to security.
Trump has mentioned that some form of peacekeeping troops will be necessary for Ukraine, with some European countries willing to send peacekeeping forces. However, the Kremlin has denied this. The tense relationship between the US and Ukraine has worsened since Trump began his second term, with him calling Zelenskyy a “dictator without elections.” Ukraine hopes that signing the minerals agreement will ensure continued US military support.
