A retired magistrate and her husband have been providing accommodation to Ukrainian refugees since 2022 in a room above their garage. However, the local council has informed them that they may have to evict their current guest because of planning rules which the couple consider to be “bureaucracy gone mad”. The council stated that they need to apply for a “change of use” for the room, which would cost between £600-£800. Despite this, the couple, who are in their 80s, are willing to host the Ukrainian lady but are unhappy about the potential costs. The garage room has a small bathroom attached and the Ukrainian guest currently pays for utilities but not rent. The couple were invited to 10 Downing Street to meet the prime minister as they were hosting Ukrainian refugees. Officials from the local council visited their home and approved the room for Ukrainian refugees. However, the current guest faces the prospect of leaving with limited affordable accommodation in the area. The council stated that they prioritise long-term safety and security and will work with the community to ensure that properties meet the required standards.
