Democratic lawmakers on the House Oversight Committee unveiled a letter that allegedly emanates from US President Donald Trump to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in 2003 on his birthday. The message includes a coded dialogue between “Donald” and “Jeffrey” and is reportedly part of a collection of birthday letters from friends for Epstein’s 50th.
The note is controversial as it makes reference to a “wonderful secret” apart from wishing Epstein a happy birthday, and features a nude illustration with Trump’s signature replacing the woman’s pubic hair. The authenticity of the note has been doubted by the White House.
Trump’s denial and his team’s aggressive legal action against The Wall Street Journal, which first reported on the note, has further muddled the situation. The legal dispute includes a $10 billion lawsuit on the grounds that Trump did not write or sign the allegedly pornographic note.
Despite the distance Trump has publicly put between himself and Epstein following a falling out over a property deal in 2004, the political fallout of their former friendship still impacts his supporters. Some of Trump’s base continue to push conspiracy theories about Epstein’s death and alleged connections to political figures, even though the FBI has dismissed such claims.
Trump’s promise to release related files has not been fulfilled, keeping the extent of the connection between Trump and Epstein a matter of speculation and controversy in the US.
