This incident took place on Wednesday beneath a highway overpass within the highly populated Iztapalapa district, situated in the southeast area of Mexico‘s capital.
The explosion caused flames and smoke to engulf the area, leading to substantial damage and the burning of various other vehicles.
According to local authorities, 19 people sustained severe wounds, including second- and third-degree burns.
Mexico City’s head of government, Clara Brugada, designated the explosion as an “emergency.” No fatalities have been reported thus far, and the injured individuals have been admitted to hospitals across the city.
Brugada added that prosecutors are examining the incident, suggesting that the explosion may have been triggered when the truck overturned on the highway.
Pictures depicted the burning truck, which was carrying 49,500 liters (13,076 gallons) of gas, overturned on the road.
This disaster unfolded on a crucial roadway leading out of Mexico City towards the city of Puebla.
The city’s authorities stated that the roadway would remain closed until further notice.
