The primary individual under consideration for the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, who is set to be released from a German prison, has chosen not to engage in an interview with the Metropolitan Police. Despite the suspect’s decision not to cooperate, Scotland Yard’s Operation Grange and its partners in Germany and Portugal will press on with their investigations concerning Madeleine’s vanishing in 2007. She was just three years of age when she disappeared from a vacation residence at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz, Portugal, while her parents dined with friends at a nearby restaurant.
Christian Brueckner, the 49-year-old German national under scrutiny, has long been the subject of inquiries. He is currently serving a seven-year term for the sexual assault of a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005, and he has persistently denied any role in Madeleine’s disappearance. Despite submitting a formal international request for questioning, the suspect’s legal team declined the interview.
Over the years, the investigations, conducted by law enforcement from the UK, Germany, and Portugal, have included extensive searches in various locations in Portugal, the latest of which took place near Lagos in June 2023. Since Operation Grange’s inception in 2011, the investigation has been supported by more than £13.2 million in funding from the Home Office, with ongoing efforts to uncover information and bring resolution to this highly publicized and unsolved case.
