An emergency summit involving Arab and Muslim countries was held in Doha to demonstrate their unity with Qatar and criticize Israel’s air strike on the Qatari capital last week.
The summit, a joint session between the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), brought together nearly 60 member states on Monday. Leaders at the meeting emphasized the importance of presenting a united stance in light of the what they described as an unmatched escalation by Israel.
The Israeli attack targeted senior Hamas leaders who were discussing a potential ceasefire proposal supported by the United States. The assault led to at least six fatalities and widespread international condemnation.
At the summit, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani expressed his concern over the attack, which he believed aimed to disrupt peace negotiations. He accused Israel of seeking to make the Arab region an Israeli sphere of influence, viewing this as a dangerous misconception, and urged the international community to exert economic pressure on Israel.
Other leaders, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, echoed the condemnation and called for Israel to end its aggressive policies. They also emphasized the danger of displacing Palestinians and the importance of maintaining peace agreements.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called for unity among Islamic countries to confront such threats, suggesting that these countries should reevaluate their ties with Israel.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani proposed the formation of a joint Arab-Islamic committee to communicate a strong stance to the UN Security Council, the General Assembly, and other international organizations.
Various other countries, including Jordan, Palestine, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Pakistan, also voiced their support for Qatar and urged for practical actions to address the conflict and prevent further violations of human rights.
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) supported these calls, emphasizing the need for strategic partners, particularly the US, to influence Israel and prevent such behavior in the future.
This summit highlighted the necessity for a collective and strong stance against Israeli aggression, while reinforcing the commitment to finding a resolution to the ongoing conflict in the region.
