Trump intends to label antifa as a significant terrorist entity, according to Donald Trump.

President Donald Trump announced early Thursday that he intends to designate antifa as a “major terrorist organization”.

Antifa, which stands for “anti-fascists,” is a broad term for left-leaning militant groups rather than a single entity. These groups are known for opposing fascists and neo-Nazis, particularly during demonstrations.

The administration has not yet provided specifics on how they plan to label a decentralized movement as a terrorist organization. The White House did not offer additional details on Wednesday.

While on a state visit to the UK, Trump made the announcement on social media shortly before 1.30am local time Thursday. He referred to antifa as a “SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER” and expressed his intention to “strongly recommend” investigations into antifa funders.

Antifa, being a home-based entity, is not eligible to be on the state department’s list of foreign terror organizations, which includes groups like the Islamic State and al-Qaida. The status is significant because it allows the justice department to prosecute individuals who provide material support to these groups, even if no violence occurs.

There is no equivalent domestic list due to broad first amendment protections for organizations operating within the US. Despite calls, especially following mass shootings by white supremacists, to establish a domestic terrorism law, no such law currently exists.

On Monday, in a conversation with reporters in the Oval Office, Trump stated that he would pursue a domestic terrorism designation for antifa with the support of Pam Bondi, the attorney general, and others in his cabinet.

A spokesperson for ABC confirmed that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will be “pre-empted indefinitely,” following pressure from the Federal Communications Commission and complaints about Kimmel’s comments regarding the killing of Kirk. This decision by Disney-owned ABC came after Nexstar, one of the largest owners of local ABC stations, announced it would no longer air Kimmel’s show due to his recent comments about the killing of Charlie Kirk. In his opening monologue, Kimmel critiqued the MAGA group for their response to this event. Trump celebrated the decision by ABC to pull Kimmel’s show, posting on his social network that “The ratings-challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED.”
