An immigration judge in the US state of Louisiana has ruled to deport pro-Palestinian protest leader Mahmoud Khalil to Algeria or Syria, citing that he did not fully disclose information on his green card application, according to court documents released on Wednesday. Khalil’s lawyers have announced their plan to appeal the deportation order, and they note that a federal district court has prohibited the government from immediately deporting or detaining him as his case progresses. Khalil stated to the American Civil Liberties Union that the Trump administration’s actions against him for his exercise of free speech are an expected continuation of their retaliation. The judge’s order on September 12th found that Khalil willfully misrepresented material facts on his application and ordered his removal from the United States to Algeria, or alternatively to Syria. Khalil, a legal permanent resident of the United States, who is married to a US citizen and has a US-born son, was detained for three months beginning in March and missed the birth of his child while in custody. A former Columbia University student and a key figure in nationwide pro-Palestinian campus protests, Khalil was released from custody in June but has continued to face the threat of deportation from federal authorities. The Trump administration has been particularly hard on pro-Palestinian protesters, labeling them as antisemitic and supporters of extremism. However, protest groups, including some Jewish groups, argue that criticism of Israel and advocacy for Palestinians does not equate to antisemitism.
