Banned from Eurovision after its invasion of Ukraine, Russia is set to host a rival international song contest on Saturday, focusing on “traditional values”. Unlike the campy and inclusive Eurovision, the new contest is more about conservative and patriotic pop, all PG-rated.
“Intervision” is an initiative by Vladimir Putin, designed to showcase Moscow’s global influence. The contest features 23 countries, including Russia’s allies like Belarus, Cuba, and Tajikistan, as well as China, India, and Saudi Arabia—with the United States being a notable exception represented by an artist named “Vassy”, who is not part of an official delegation.
Intervision is not new; it was originally launched in the 1960s by the Soviet Union. Moscow claims its revival is apolitical, but Ukraine condemns it as a propaganda attempt to whitewash Russia’s war. When questioned, contestants expressed a lack of awareness or understanding of any political implications, emphasizing they are there to spread peace. The revival of Intervision is not just about the recent exclusion from Eurovision but also reflects a rejection of the values and representation of the latter in the eyes of the Kremlin.
Russian citizens are divided, with some expressing preference for Intervision, seeing it as a more interesting and peaceful event compared to the often boycotted Eurovision, while others remain circumspect about its true nature, hoping it will unite nations.
