Major cleanup efforts were underway in southern China and Hong Kong, following the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Ragasa. The storm’s destructive path left a trail of damage across Hong Kong, where international flights resumed on Thursday but some schools remained closed. In Guangdong province in mainland China, over 2 million people were evacuated, and crews were using excavators to clear fallen trees and unblock roads. Ragasa, the most powerful tropical cyclone of the year, also caused fatal destruction in Taiwan, resulting in 14 deaths, and the Philippines, where 11 people lost their lives. Videos on social media showed people in Macau fishing in flooded streets, despite authorities advising them to stay indoors. The fierce strength of Ragasa was evident in footage of the storm surge smashing through the glass doors of a luxury hotel in Hong Kong. The state broadcaster reported that over 50,000 trees were destroyed in the city of Yangjiang, and rescuers were using inflatable boats to save trapped residents in Zhuhai. In Vietnam, the prime minister ordered workers to prepare for the storm, including protecting infrastructure, securing fishing vessels, and cutting down trees. Although Ragasa has weakened into a tropical storm, it still poses a threat of heavy rain for China, Vietnam, and other parts of Southeast Asia. However, Hong Kong maintained its second-lowest typhoon signal 3, and its airport authority announced that airlines would gradually resume flights
