A north Queensland mayor who was accused of misrepresenting his army service has resigned. Troy Thompson, who was suspended on full pay in November while the Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission investigated allegations of misrepresentation, had been in trouble for several months amid mounting pressure from the community for his resignation. In a video posted on Facebook, Thompson stated that he was not admitting any wrongdoing and described his resignation as a “deliberate and principled stand to protect the democratic rights of the people of Townsville.” He claimed that political interference had no place in democracy and insisted that only the community should decide who leads the city. Thompson has now declared his intentions to run in the upcoming byelection to give the people of Townsville the chance to decide their leader.
