Mexico City has begun extraditing drug cartel figures to the United States, including notorious drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero, who is responsible for the murder of a U.S. DEA agent in 1985. This move comes at a time when the Trump Administration has been increasing pressure on drug trafficking organizations. The 29 individuals sent to the U.S. were from various Mexican organized crime groups and faced charges related to drug trafficking and homicide. Among those extradited was Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, a leader of the Juarez drug cartel. The removal of these cartel figures coincided with a visit to Washington by Mexico’s officials, who were attempting to avert the Trump Administration’s threat of imposing 25% tariffs on all Mexican imports.
